Tahrir Square
You know the famous Tahrir Square from TV? Founded in 1858 by the Ottoman Viceroy Pasha, Tahrir Square got its name from a military coup that began in 1952. 25 years later the next so-called bread riots took place there and in 2003 people gathered again in Tahrir Square to protest against the invasion of Iraq. This was followed by protests against the Mubarak government and Morsi’s ouster.
After this great prosperity of Egypt followed a period of weakness known as the 1st Intermediate Period.
At the beginning of the 11th Dynasty, Egypt regained its mighty period, which lasted only two dynasties before the 2nd Intermediate Period, with a famous Asian occupation, the Heksos, signifying foreign rule.
A few years later, a large royal family that came to Thebes from the south to liberate Egypt from occupation restored the country to its mighty times.
The golden era of the pharaohs left evidence of their architectural skills in various places in Egypt, which you can still marvel at today.
Your former capital Thebes, today’s Luxor, bear witness to the life in Egypt at that time in your archaeological sites.
Visit some of these sights with one of our Luxor trips from Cairo.
