Introduction: The Role of Minimalist Design
According to a UX expert cited in Forrester report as published in Forbes:
“every dollar spent on UX brings between $2 and $100 dollars in return. That’s an ROI of 9,900%”
However, not every dollar spent pays off the same, which has a lot to do with design.
To win consumer attention, visual appeal is key. Moreover, design impacts the decision-making time and each design varies in the cognitive load placed on the user. In addition, cluttered designs lead to user disengagement. Achieving fast decision-making time and user engagement is a central goal of professional marketplace app development services. Let’s back this with UX user research. One study has been conducted into 3 landing pages below. Web 1 & Web 2 are both minimalist though the Web 2 header menu is grouped under a burger menu button. Web 3 is a more traditional UI including a lot of elements.
The survey was conducted on three age groups (Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X). The total number of respondents was 550. The results for the three web pages above are shown below. The 5-point Likert scale was used to evaluate designs with 1 for “fully dislike” and 5 for “fully like”.
Table Results of UX Minimalist Design Study
Web design | Gen Z | Millennials | Gen X |
Web 1 | 3.82 | 3.68 | 3.67 |
Web 2 | 3.71 | 3.54 | 3.80 |
Web 3 | 2.36 | 2.32 | 2.24 |
Interestingly, minimalist-looking Web1 and Web2 have scored differently. Gen Z would prefer a little bit more elements within the minimalist range. Gen X would like the least elements on the page. However, not surprisingly, non-minimalist traditional design scored the least somewhere between ‘somewhat dislike’ and ‘neutral’.
In terms of marketplace app development services, there isn’t always a difference in development costs for web1&web2 vs. web3. A clean minimalist look may end up costing even more than a traditional one due to sophistication, micro-interactions, custom typography, etc. The costs of traditional designs depend on the number of elements which takes up the time of marketplace developers but does not result in better business outcomes.
Key Benefits of Minimalist Marketplace Apps
Minimalism in marketplace apps is defined as a design process that focuses on core functionalities, prioritizes the cleanliness and smoothness of every interaction, and seeks performance gains. However, with fewer elements, the challenge is to stand out. This is why custom fonts and unique micro-interactions are at the forefront of marketplace app development services.
In general, marketplace app development should always strive to ensure a frictionless user experience. According to Forrester Research, 46% of people would not buy again if they had an interruptive mobile experience. Moreover, their findings suggest that frictionless design can increase conversion rates by up to 400%. As such, a marketplace app development company should prioritize frictionless user flows.
Alternatively, you can opt for a developer marketplace like Upwork, but make sure the samples include minimalist designs. While an app developer marketplace is a good option, it might not have a comparatively sizable variety of services, niche insight, and flexibility to cater to unique needs. This is where custom online marketplace development services benefit your business more. In addition, they can easily pivot in design as you need, implement the latest trends in micro-interactions, and optimize for the greatest performance. The latter is responsible for purchases from 90% of your user base as the previously mentioned research suggests. Almost all users are prepared to stop using your mobile app marketplace if it is simply on the slow side of things. And, in terms of financial losses, slow cluttered UIs with many elements cost $2 billion in losses annually.
Overall, the key benefits of a minimalist marketplace app whether it is a mobile app development marketplace or a web one are as follows:
- Higher ROI of your UX spend;
- Higher sales;
- Loyal customers / return customers;
- Faster loading times;
- Higher user engagement.
